Manifest Destiny Lesson Plan

US History Lesson Plans

Topic Overview:

As the bustling US grew in population and commerce, it looked to the West for opportunity.  The largely Christianized culture saw westward expansion as being divinely mandated for the nation’s future.  Thousands of people, feeling a religious mandate to carry democracy and free enterprise to the entire continent, bought wagons and provisions and headed west to fulfill their “manifest destiny.”

Activity Overview:

In this simulation game teams of students will attempt to claim states that joined the Union after the Revolution.  They will answer trivia questions based on how the US obtained territory across the continent.  For each correct answer they will earn play money with which to purchase states.  The group with the most claims to states wins.
